Factors that affect on highway alignment




The various factors which affect the alignment of a road is

-Purpose and class of road:

The alignment should be selected according to purpose and c; ass of roads. The National highway between two important towns should be kept perfectly straight as far as possible.

-Obligatory points:

The alignment should pass through obligatory points such as intermediate important towns, group of villages and places commercial, social and military importance.




-The need for traffic:

The alignment should suit the needs of traffic. It should be as direct as possible for fast-moving traffic.

-Gradient:

The alignment should have gradient not steeper than ate ruling gradient. To avoid excessive fall or ineffective rise, the alignment is to be changed.



-Curves:

The alignment should have a flat curve. The radius of the curve should not be less than 230m in plain for fast-moving traffic on National or State Highway.

-Sight distance:

The alignment should provide good sight distance. So, to provide sufficient distance the alignment may have to change.
