Wooden Floor

In hilly areas where the wood is available in a large quantity and on the other hand the climate is damp, wooden floors are commonly used. Wooden floors are also used for dancing halls, auditoriums, etc. It is much important that precautions should be taken to check the dampness from rising above. So it is much important for a ground flooring that the entire area of the ground below the floor is covered with 15 cm cement concrete base. This layer of concrete is called 'site' or 'oversite concrete'. On the surface of oversite concrete, some intermediate walls are constructed which are not less than 10 cm in thickness. These walls are named as sleeper walls or dwarf walls, and are, generally, never more than 2 meters apart in distance. The sleeper or dwarf wall support the bridging joists or floor joists which are nailed to wall plats at their end. The wall plates are embedded in the wall utilizing cement mortar, above a 38 cm layer of Damp proof course. The bridging or floor join are, usually, placed at 30 to 40 cm center to center across the shorter span. The wooden boarding is taken as 25 to 38 mm thick and is supported by the bridging joints.
