Tiled Flooring
Tiles are pre-casted of cement concrete or pottery which are manufactured in various shapes and sizes. These tiles are laid over a level hard bed of the cement concrete of 15 cm layer. Over this bed of cement concrete, a thin layer of 1:1 cement mortar is laid. The pre-casted tiles are laid over this mortar with the careful filling of joints with mortar which are generally paper thick. The extra cement which comes out at surface through joints is wiped off and joints cleaned with sawdust. The surface, after two or three days, is then rubbed with a soft carborundum stone to chip off all the projecting edges or surfaces. The whole surface is then polished by rubbing it with pumice stone by machine or by hand. The polished surface is then washed with a soap solution.
This type of floor is used in modern W.C's and other aristocratic buildings. This is non-absorbent, it can be repaired in patches. It is durable and gives a pleasant appearance. But it is very costly and slippery.
