Cut-back bitumen

The solution of bituminous material in a volatile solvent is known as cut-back.

A Cut back asphalt contains nearly 80% bituminous material and 20% solvent. The types of solvents to be used are flux oils, gasoline, and kerosene.

Cut-backs can be used without or after light heating. They are only used when the surface of the road and aggregate are dry.

It is obtained by fluxing asphaltic bitumen in the presence of some suitable liquid distillates of coal tar or petroleum. It can be applied cold as bitumen paint.
