NATIONAL HIGHWAY




All the main highways running through length and breadth of the country, connecting major ports, capitals of States, foreign highways, etc., are known as National Highways. These roads constitute the main arteries of transport in the country and are also of military importance. These roads are selected in such a manner that they afford uninterrupted road communication through the country. These National Highways should have carriageway of at least two-lane width i.e., of 8 m width. These should have a modern type of surfacing. The responsibility of construction and maintenance of these highways lies with the Central Government.



(a) The national highways network of India is a network of highways that are managed and maintained by agencies of the Government of India.

(b) These highways measured over 96,260 km as of 2015, including over 1000 km of limited-access expressways.

(c) Out of 96,260 km of national highways 22500 plus km are least 4 lanes with the remaining 50,000 km 2 lanes.

(d) The Indian government has set itself the target of construct and upgrade 30 km of highway per day from 2017 and all new construction will be using cement concrete instead of bitumen.
