Raveling Of Road

Loose materials that ‘ravel’ from the surface or edges of the pavement,
leading to depressions that can fill with wet and loose aggregate which can create issuesthis can be known as raveling.

Cause of raveling:

Several including:

Loss of bond between aggregate particles and also the asphalt binder as a result of:
1.A dust coating on the
aggregate particles forces the asphalt binder to bond with the dust instead of an aggregate.

2.Aggregate Segregation:
If fine particles are missing from the aggregate matrix, then the asphalt binder is simply able to bind the remaining coarse particles at their comparatively few contact points.

3.Inadequate compaction during construction:
High density is needed to develop comfortable cohesion among the HMA. The third figure higher than shows a road suffering from raveling due to inadequate compaction caused by weather paving.

4.Mechanical dislodging by bound sure traffic. the primary and fourth figures higher than show raveling possibly caused by snowplows.

Remedial measures for traveling:

A raveled pavement should be investigated to determine the root reason for failure. Repair methods typically comprise one amongst two categories:

1. Small, localized areas of raveling: take away the raveled pavement and patch.

2. Large raveled areas indicative of general HMA failure: take away the damaged pavement and overlay.
