Different types of stair case

1.Straight Flight Stairs :

A straight flight is one in which all steps are parallel to one another and rises in the same direction. A straight stair may consist of a single flight only or two or more flight in its length which are separated by landings.

2.Dog Legged Stairs :

A dog-legged stair is called from its being bent or crooked suddenly round in fancied resemblance to dog's leg. It is convenient from when the going is restricted and sufficient space equal to the combined width of two flights is only available. In this type of stair successive flights rise in opposite directions. The flights of the stair may be separated by :
(a) A half-space landing.  (b)A quarter space landing.  (c)Two sets of the winder and no landing.
The last method should be avoided as far as possible as it makes the stair to steeps and dangerous near the newel post.

3.Newel Stairs :

This is another name for dog-legged stair because of the newels from a conspicuous part of the structure. A newel is usually placed at the foot and head of each flight of the stair.

4.Open Well Stairs :

An open well stair or an open newel stair is very similar to a dog-legged stair, but in this type, there is a rectangular well hole or opening, between the backward and forward flights. The width of stair would, therefore, be twice the width of the step plus the width of the well-hole or opening. At head and foot of each flight of the stair, newels are placed from a conspicuous feature for the stair to be called(Newel Stair). It is convenient from of stair and the well-hole allows top lighting. An open well stair gives satisfactory results and hence it should be tried to provide an open well stair though it requires a little more space than a dog-legged stair.

5.Geometrical Stairs :

A geometrical stair is one in which there is an opening or well hole between the backward and forward flights. In this type of stair, both the string and handrails are continuous and are set out in accordance with geometrical principles. Such a stair requires little more width, but only about the same length of space as a dog-legged stair. The change of direction is obtained winders radiating from the center of curvature of the curve between the flight.

6.Circular Stair :

Circular stairs are constructed of winders and there are two forms of circular stairs, (a) Spiral stair (b) Circular geometrical stair. Circular stairs are generally provided at the back-side of building for rendering access to its various floors for service purposes. This type of stair mostly constructed in R.C.C and Iron etc.

7.Bifurcated Stair :

This type of stairs is very common in public building in which it appears as a prominent feature. In this type of stair, the bottom wide flight is divided at a landing into two narrower flights which branch off to the right and left.

8.Spiral Stairs :

In this type, the steps project from a center post.
Spiral stairs are generally avoided but where the available space to construct a stair is too small, this type of stair is adopted. This type is either constructed in C.I or R.C.C  A.C.I pipe newel is fixed and around this newel C.I steps are fixed. In the case of R.C.C, a column of the circular section is constructed in the center from which R.C.C steps around it are constructed.
